Yes. Occasionally Microllam® LVL and Parallam® PSL are used together as a composite beam for repair situations or due to material availability.
- 2.0E Parallam PSL is available in 3.5”, 5.25” and 7” widths and depths up to 18”
- 2.0E Microllam LVL is only available in a 1.75” width and depths up to 24”
These products can be combined to make a beam up to 7” wide, provided the beam was originally designed or specified as Microllam LVL. Only matching depth pieces should be used. Analysis for a composite beam is not available in ForteWEB™ software. Since these products have the same modulus of elasticity, adequacy can be verified by designing as a Microllam beam and substituting Parallam sections as needed.
Connections for beams, which apply to composited beams described above, can be found in our Trus Joist® Beam, Header and Column Specifier's Guide TJ-9000, page 28 and 29 (assemblies C & D). Note that hanger/connector capacities may be different depending on product material. For a mixed material member, the lowest of those connector values should be used.
