The first general note beneath the hole chart shown in the TJI® Specifier’s Guide (TJ-4000) states that while the vertical location of a web hole within the web is unimportant, 1/8″ of web (minimum) must be maintained at the top or bottom of the hole.
This requirement is intended to prevent flange damage while cutting the web hole and has no structural significance. Having no web between the edge of the hole and the face of adjacent flange is permissible so long as no flange damage occurred, and the hole is otherwise acceptable (either per literature hole chart, ForteWEB® or Javelin® software).
