If Weyerhaeuser’s Trus Joist® engineered wood products (EWP) or oriented strand board (OSB) panels have been damaged or decayed by moisture exposure, Weyerhaeuser recommends replacing the affected products or working with a design professional for site-specific evaluation. These products are intended for dry-use service applications only1. Like other untreated wood framing members, they can tolerate moisture exposure under typical construction conditions, including rain during construction. However, moisture from plumbing leaks, pipe ruptures, building envelope failures, prolonged wetting, or similar conditions can create significant product and safety concerns.
If moisture exposure results in mold growth, the affected products can be cleaned in accordance with EPA recommendations and should be inspected to confirm that decay has not occurred. Mold alone does not necessarily indicate structural damage, but any signs of decay, softening, section loss, delamination, or other deterioration should be evaluated before the product remains in service.
As the manufacturer, Weyerhaeuser does not perform site-specific assessments of water damage to EWP or OSB products and does not provide repair designs for products that have been damaged or decayed from moisture exposure. Product warranties are not applicable to damage resulting from prolonged exposure or conditions outside the intended dry-use application.
For moisture-affected products, replacement is the recommended course of action unless a qualified design professional determines that an alternate site-specific solution is appropriate. Repairs intended to address large areas of section loss may not perform as anticipated for several reasons, including connection complexity and the need to avoid splitting or otherwise damaging remaining sound material. For additional information, refer to TB-206.
Design professionals evaluating affected products may find relevant considerations in Moisture Effects on Weyerhaeuser Engineered Wood Products and Oriented Strand Board. Technical bulletins TB-817, TB-818, TB-838, TB-832 and TB-319 may provide some assistance to the design professional in providing repair details for damage limited to small areas and within the parameters listed.
