TJI® joist Used As Wall Studs

Trus Joist® TJI® joists are occasionally used as wall studs in regions where energy considerations require thicker walls. Although Weyerhaeuser recommends using TimberStrand® LSL for long, straight, defect-free wall studs, TJI joists as wall studs may be used as an alternative when a thick wall system is desired.

It is important to note that TJI joists have not been evaluated per the ICC-wood based studs acceptance criteria (AC202) for this application, and thus have no code acceptance. The design and use of the TJI joist as wall studs require a designer of record to provide the building department with proper documentation to approve the application as alternate material (Weyerhaeuser does not provide design or documentation for this application).
