Insulated Header Orientation

Can the insulated header shown in detail IS3 of the Specifier's Guide for the TJ-Insulated Headers, Rim Board, and Corners (TJ-9009) be oriented with the TimberStrand® LSL header to the inside?

Yes.  While our insulated series details call for the structural rim/header to be oriented towards the outside of the structure for consistency of load-path, reversing the orientation of the header in the IS3 detail is permitted and likely preferred.  Locating the TimberStrand® LSL to the inside of the structure will eliminate the need to remove insulation and install blocking.  Furthermore, a dew point analysis shows that there are no condensation concerns associated with either orientation for the ranges of environmental conditions shown in the literature.
