Membrane Protection Requirements (2012 IRC)

The 2012 International Residencial Code (IRC) requires the lightweight framing (I-Joists, plated trusses, etc) in a floor system be protected by a residential sprinkler system or a "membrane protection".

What are the requirements of the membrane protection?

Do gypsum sheathing joints need to be taped and finished? No

Are there special requirements beyond fire blocking around unprotected areas less than 80 sq.ft.? No
